Nana Enyimayew
Overview
Dr Nana Enyimayew is a specialist in public health and in the planning, organisation and management of health systems. He has contributed significantly to developing Ghana’s health system over the last two decades and has extensive experience of health systems at district, regional and national level. Key areas of expertise include:
- organisation and management of health systems
- health systems reforms including Sector Wide Approaches (SWAps)
- development of district health systems and primary health care systems
- health economics, particularly health financing
- HIV/AIDS policy perspectives.
Background and relevant experience
Between 2003 and 2006, Nana was a director in the Ghana Ministry of Health, responsible for planning and establishing an integrated ambulance service for the country, aimed particularly at reducing maternal morbidity. This role involved providing leadership in developing policies to guide pre-hospital emergency care; developing legislation on ambulance operations; creating and establishing conditions of service for a new national programme; and implementing an effective public education programme on ambulance services.
Prior to this, Nana was a public health adviser and team leader to the Malawi Health Population and Nutrition Programme. During this time he piloted schemes in a district of 1.4 million people and advised the Ministry of Health and Population on SWAps. As technical adviser to DANIDA in Ghana between 1997 and 1998, he worked with the Ministry of Health and other donors on developing and sustaining health systems and health services for the country.
As Regional Director of Health Services between 1987 and 1994, Nana provided strategic leadership to the regional health management team; translated national health policies for implementation at district and sub-district levels; coordinated the plans and activities of 13 district programmes of six divisions of the Ministry of Health; was responsible for the administration of health services in the Volva and Brong Ahafo regions; and liaised with the regional political administration and other sectors in health and development programmes for the Volva and Brong Ahafo regions.
Nana has also consulted in Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Examples of recent consultancy work include: a review of partnership funding for the Uganda Health Sector Support Programme; evaluation of a five-year programme of work of the Health Research Unit of Ghana; a strategic planning process for the District Health System in Enugu State, Nigeria; and serving as a World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Adviser on the preparation of the HIV component of the Global Fund Round 4 proposal for Ghana.
